Nora O’Donnell is best known as the host of CBS Evening News. But as of January 23, 2025, that is no longer the case. The TV host and experienced journalist announced her departure from the program in July 2024, so does that mean she has left the CBS News division as a whole?
Some viewers were shocked when Nora bid farewell in her final broadcast. In an emotional farewell speech in 2025, Nora acknowledged that CBS Evening News is «America's longest-running evening news program, and its success is ensured by the best journalists from around the world — correspondents, producers, researchers, and camera crews who tirelessly work to bring you the news every evening».
«And that won’t change, because journalism matters», - Nora emphasized. «I know this because I’ve heard it from many of you, the viewers».
Find out all about Nora’s departure and what it means for CBS News below.
Nora is leaving CBS Evening News after more than a decade, but CBS clarified that she is not leaving the network itself.
«After five years in the anchor chair, @NorahODonnell bids farewell to CBS Evening News tonight», - the program tweeted on January 23, 2025. «Her reports have not only made history, but deeply touched viewers across the country. This is not a goodbye — Nora will remain an important part of the CBS News family as a senior correspondent».
In July 2024, Nora officially announced her decision to leave the evening news program. According to a letter to employees, the journalist wrote: «After this year’s elections, I have decided to step down from my position as anchor and editor of CBS Evening News to take on a new role within the network».
«There is so much work to be proud of! But I have spent 12 years in the anchor chair here, at CBS News, tied to the daily broadcast and the challenges of the continuous news cycle», - Nora noted, pointing to her reason for leaving — «It's time to do something else».
Nora will remain with CBS News as a senior correspondent.
«I will still be anchoring all of our major events this year, including the elections and, hopefully, debates! Additionally, I am pleased to announce that I have made a long-term commitment to CBS News to continue to do the same stories and conduct big interviews that have become our hallmark», - said Nora, a Washington native. «I will continue to contribute to Evening News and all of our news programs, including 60 Minutes».
No, CBS Evening News has not been canceled. However, Nora will be replaced by former 60 Minutes contributor John Dickerson and CBS member Maurice DuBois
