Novak Djokovic announced his withdrawal from the French Open due to a «medial meniscus tear» in his knee. The 37-year-old tennis player posted a public statement on his Instagram on Tuesday, June 4.

«I am very sad to announce that I have to withdraw from the French Open», - Novak wrote. «I played with all my heart and gave everything in yesterday’s match and, unfortunately, due to a tear in the medial meniscus in my right knee, my team and I have made the difficult decision after careful consideration and consultation».

Novak added that he wishes «good luck to the players competing this week, and sincerely thanks the incredible fans for all the love and support».

«See you soon. With love and gratitude, Nole», - the athlete concluded at the end of his post.

Novak’s announcement came just one day after his victory over Francisco Cerundolo. Although he seemed ready to face Francisco again in the future, Novak admitted to a group of journalists that his knee was hurting. According to CNN, Novak acknowledged that the pain only subsided towards the end of the match after taking medication.

«At some point, honestly, I didn’t know if I should continue with what was happening», - Novak told journalists, as reported by the publication. He also noted that he began to feel «slight discomfort» in his knee before the tournament. However, the tennis player added that it was not a «injury that bothered me».

To worsen the situation, Novak revealed that a significant amount of rain in Paris caused him to slip too many times, likely exacerbating the injury.

«I have slipped and fallen on clay many times in my life, and on grass too, but today it was too many times», - Novak explained to the press. «Could this injury have been prevented? Perhaps if the court had been taken care of a little more often during the set. That’s what I was asking for»
