Shortly after Savannah Guthrie returned to work on the Today show, a new ransom note emerged concerning her mother, Nancy Guthrie. TMZ founder Harvey Levin reported the contents of the letter on Monday, April 6, noting that it was sent by the same person who had previously demanded Bitcoin in connection with Nancy’s disappearance.
Immediately after discussing the note on TMZ Live, the publication reported that it had received a second letter stating, «I saw her alive with them in Sonora, Mexico». However, in the previous letter received by TMZ, the same person claimed that Nancy was dead.
The FBI and local authorities have not yet confirmed the authenticity of the note. Nancy, 84, has still not been found.
According to the publication, the sender of the alleged ransom notes mentioned distrust of the FBI, writing, «It's incredible that millions have been wasted, and here I am ready to hand them over on a silver platter since February 11 for Bitcoin, but I’m being ignored as a fraud… They are free, and the case is frozen, but the ego remains hot when it comes to me. The height of arrogance».
The unknown individual also stated that they did not kidnap Nancy, calling her abduction «a terrible crime», - and added that they «just want justice and to live peacefully», - according to TMZ.
Nancy went missing on February 1. A surveillance camera captured a masked and gloved individual entering her home in Tucson, Arizona, early in the morning. Blood found at the scene matched Nancy’s DNA. Savannah, 54, and her siblings, Annie and Cameron, have repeatedly appealed to the public for any information regarding their mother’s disappearance.
As of the publication date, the whereabouts of Nancy and her abductors remain unknown. The investigation is ongoing.
Before returning to Today on April 6, Savannah gave an emotional interview to her longtime friend and former colleague Hoda Kotb, in which she spoke about her mother’s abduction. The journalist recalled the moment she learned about Nancy’s kidnapping and that her brother immediately suggested it was likely for ransom.
«He said, 'I think she was kidnapped for ransom.' And I replied, 'What?!'» Savannah said through tears. «It sounds so — how could I have been so naive — but I asked, 'Do you think it’s because of me?' He said, 'I'm sorry, dear, but yes, maybe… I hope not. Honestly, we don’t know anything. We don’t know anything. So I don’t know if it’s because she’s my mom, and someone thought, 'Oh, this woman has money, we can make a quick buck.' That would make sense, but it’s probably too hard to comprehend».
Regarding her return to television, Savannah noted that her work is her «purpose at the moment».
«I want to smile. And when I do, it will be genuine. And my joy will be my protest. My joy will be my response. And being there is joyful», - she explained. «And when it’s not, I will say so. I am so grateful to have this family. I consider it my family, my big family, and when times are tough, you want to be with family. And I want to be with my family»
