MTV Video Music Awards 2024 News: Winner of Best New Artist, nominees and their achievements

Every year, several young musical artists are nominated for the MTV Video Music Awards in the category of «Best New Artist». Although there can only be one winner, every rising star deserves recognition! The following artists were nominated at the 2024 ceremony: Benson Boone, Chappell Roan, Gracie Abrams, Shaboozy, Teddy Swims, and Tayla.
The winner of the «Best New Artist» award was Chappell, 26 years old.
Accepting her award, Chappell dedicated her win «to all the drag artists who inspire [her]» and saluted «all the gay, transgender people who inspire pop music».
«For all the gays from the Midwest watching right now — I see you, I understand you, because I am one of you», - she continued. «And never let anyone tell you that you can’t be exactly who you want to be».
All the nominees for Best New Artist had a productive year. Tayla, 22 years old, won a VMA in the «Afrobeats» category for her song «Water».
«African music can also be pop music», - Tayla noted after receiving the award. «It's so special, but also bitter, because I know there is a tendency to lump all African artists under Afrobeats… African music is so diverse, it’s more than just Afrobeats».
Benson, 22 years old, also had a busy year. Before taking home the Moonman statue for Best Alternative Song, he served as an opening act for global pop icon Taylor Swift during her Eras tour. The author of the hit «Beautiful Things» gradually gained popularity thanks to his powerful vocals and range.
As for Chappell, the artist of «Good Luck, Babe!» gained traction on social media and in the music industry. Thanks to her vibrant style and bold vocal choices, her style quickly caught the attention of fans after performances at several music festivals last year. Earlier this summer, Olivia Rodrigo — herself a VMA winner — invited Chappell to perform on stage during her GUTS tour. The duo performed another hit single by Chappell, «HOT TO GO!»
Chappell and Benson are not the only artists who have worked with stars like Taylor, 34, and Olivia, 21. Gracie has previously collaborated with both mega-stars. In fact, Gracie, 25, co-wrote the song «Us» with Taylor, and they even showed fans how interesting the songwriting process was this summer.
As seen in a video on Instagram that Gracie shared in June, the singer of «Close to You» and the artist of «Karma» nearly started a fire indoors and had to figure out how to properly put it out.
«Writing this song from 2 am to 6 am was one of the most fun moments of my life», - Gracie captioned her video at the time. «@taylorswift now we know how to use a fire extinguisher. I love you»
