Naomi Osaka became known for her victories on the tennis court, but in recent years she has also taken on a new role — motherhood. A four-time Grand Slam champion, 27-year-old Osaka welcomed her first child, a daughter, in July 2023 with her then-boyfriend Cordae. Although their relationship has since ended, Osaka remains focused on raising her little girl while balancing it with a return to professional tennis.

Osaka and Cordae welcomed their daughter, Shay, in Los Angeles in July 2023. At the US Open 2023, Osaka told ESPN that they chose the name because «Shay» means «gift from God». She added, «I wanted her to feel like a gift from God to me and her dad».
Osaka also told PEOPLE about Shay’s nursery design, which is done in a soft cloud theme. «I wanted something that was very peaceful and calming, that would help the child and me feel comfortable», - she explained. «In the end, we chose a cloud theme, which seemed perfect for what we envisioned».
Osaka first announced her pregnancy in January 2023 in a now-deleted Instagram post. «Can't wait to get back on the court, but here’s a little life update for 2023», - she captioned a carousel of images, including a photo of an ultrasound scan and a touching message written in both English and Japanese.
In August 2025, Osaka told the Today show that Shay will finally see her mother in action at the US Open. «It will be her first time at a tennis match, so I don’t know how loud she will be», - she said
