The administration of Donald Trump has imposed a 10% tariff on all goods imported into the United States from China. As a direct result of this action, the United States Postal Service suspended shipments from China overnight, before acknowledging the situation on Wednesday, February 5, 2025. Does this mean that the USA no longer accept shipments from China?

It is reported that the USA has closed the loophole that previously allowed sending packages worth up to $ 800 to America without paying taxes or additional fees. Some retail sellers from China, including popular clothing sites Shein and Temu, used the fee exemption to send inexpensive packages to the USA, according to the BBC.

Learn about the new situation unfolding regarding shipments sent to the USA from China.

According to the USPS website, they are working closely with Customs and Border Protection to «implement an effective mechanism for collecting new tariffs on China to ensure minimal disruptions in package delivery».

Shipments have not been completely suspended from China, but apparently they were halted for a short period, which USPS acknowledged on their website on February 5 in a statement titled «International Service Disruptions».

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian responded to the shipment disruptions, telling journalists: «In principle, I want to point out that we urge the United States to stop politicizing trade and economic issues and using them as tools, as well as to stop the unreasonable suppression of Chinese companies», - reports the BBC.

In its statement on February 5, USPS confirmed that it will «continue to accept all international incoming mail and parcels from China and Hong Kong». Therefore, package delivery has resumed. However, it is unclear how USPS will handle future imports from China to America.

A tariff is a tax on goods imported from another country. In a statement on Truth Social, Trump confirmed that he «imposed a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada (10% on Canadian energy) and an additional 10% tariff on China. This was done under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) due to the serious threat of illegal immigrants and deadly drugs killing our citizens, including fentanyl. We must protect Americans, and it is my duty as president to ensure the safety of all. I made a promise in my campaign to stop the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs across our borders, and Americans supported this in huge numbers»
