Spirit Airlines has updated its dress code standards, causing outrage on the internet. Many frequent flyers believe that the airline’s latest rules regarding clothing and tattoos are inappropriate, but what are the new standards?
Earlier this month, a man was removed from a Spirit flight for wearing a hoodie that was deemed offensive, according to multiple sources. In October 2024, two women were removed from a flight for wearing crop tops. According to several sources, the passengers took off their sweaters on board the plane to cool down, and a flight attendant allegedly asked them to cover up. The women captured this moment in a then-viral video on social media, and other passengers defended them for what they were wearing.

Before the updated contract of carriage was released, Spirit previously prohibited passengers who were «barefoot or not properly clothed, or (if their) clothing was indecent, inappropriate, or offensive in nature».
According to the updated contract of carriage dated January 22, 2025, Spirit Airlines can now remove a passenger from a flight if they are «barefoot or not properly dressed (i.e. clothing is see-through; not sufficiently covered; exposed breasts, buttocks, or other intimate parts)», - or a person whose «clothing or item, including body art, is indecent, inappropriate, or offensive in nature».
Tattoos were not part of Spirit’s previous dress code rules.
According to the Spirit website, «changes can be made online up to one hour before the scheduled departure» and «if a guest cancels a booking within 24 hours or less after booking, for a flight that is seven days or more away, they are entitled to a full refund in the original form of payment». Passengers with bookings that do not fall within this time window cannot receive a refund, but can receive a booking credit
