Ari Aster, «Miracle» and «Midsommar» visionary director, returns with the film «Eddington», a provocative contemporary western exploring deep societal divisions in modern America during the pandemic era. The film will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2025 and has already received both praise and criticism for its bold satire and timely themes.
At a press conference in Cannes, Aster described the film as a response to the «state of fear and anxiety about the world», reflecting his concerns about the breakdown of social ties in modern society. He stated: «We are on a dangerous path and an experiment that has gone wrong», emphasizing the film’s exploration of divisions and disinformation that have become characteristic of recent years.
The film’s plot unfolds in May 2020 in the fictional town of Eddington, New Mexico, showing the escalating feud between a sheriff refusing to wear a mask (Joaquin Phoenix) and a progressive mayor (Pedro Pascal) fueling tension in society during the chaos of a global crisis. As personal and political boundaries blur, the town becomes a microcosm for the cracks tearing through America during the pandemic.
The film is scheduled for release in American theaters on July 18, 2025, with distribution from A24.
Alongside Phoenix and Pascal, the cast also includes Emma Stone as the emotionally unstable wife of the sheriff and Austin Butler as a charismatic conspiracy theorist fueling paranoia in the town. The ensemble is completed by Luke Grimes as Guy, the sheriff’s deputy; Deirdre O’Connell as Donna, the sheriff’s mother-in-law; Michael Ward as Michael, a young intern in the department; Clifton Collins Jr. as Lodge, a local resident caught in escalating tensions; and William Belle as Officer Butterfly Jimenez.
The film «Eddington» will be released exclusively in American theaters in July. There is currently no confirmed release date on streaming platforms. However, considering A24's distribution history, the film may become available on digital platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, or Hulu a few months after its theatrical release
