Nothing causes as much horror as a horror movie hinting that its plot is based on real events. The film «Weapon», released on August 8, 2025, is the latest film from Warner Bros. that haunts viewers, and many left the theaters wondering if it is based on a real story. Is it true? Hollywood Life separates fact from fiction, dissecting the film «Weapon» here. (Warning: spoilers ahead for the film «Weapon»)

No, there is no post-credits scene in the film «Weapon». However, rumors circulated online as several box office hits this year had mid or post-credits scenes.

In short, Gladys — Alex’s aunt in the film — needs children to stay young and restore her health. As for how she manages to devise her scheme, Gladys uses name tags of Alex’s classmates taken from their lockers at school. Using a ritual with the name tags, she lures the children into the basement, and Gladys keeps them there, covering up her scheme with a tree.

No, the film «Weapon» is not based on a true story. However, director, writer, and producer Zack Kregger created the film because of a real tragedy, as he told Entertainment Weekly in April 2025.

«I had a tragedy in my life that was really very difficult», - Zack explained. «Someone very, very, very close to me suddenly passed away, and honestly, I was so devastated that I just started writing 'Weapon', not out of any ambitions, but just as a way to cope with my emotions».

Calling «Weapon» an «incredibly personal story», the director added that there are «certain chapters [of the film] that are really autobiographical, and I feel like I lived them».

Three months later, Zack revealed in a separate interview for GQ that the person close to him who passed away was his late friend Trevor Moore, a colleague in acting and filmmaking. The cryptic opening of the film «Weapon» literally includes the phrase «a story from real life», about which Zack said it «just slipped out» of him during the writing process.

«I literally started with the phrase 'This is a real story'», - Zack pointed out. «I thought it would be cool to start the film with a little girl telling a story by the campfire. I didn’t even know what story she would tell».

Trevor was an actor, comedian, filmmaker, and musician who was a member of the comedy group The Whitest Kids U' Know, which also included Zack.

In August 2021, Trevor died after a tragic accident, falling from the balcony of his home in Franklin Hills, Los Angeles. The cause of his death was head injuries from the fall and Trevor’s blood alcohol content significantly exceeded the legal limit, according to Deadline
