The Netflix movie, released on June 6, 2025, was written, directed, and produced by the director and star Taraji P. Henson in the role of single mother Jania Wilkins. At the end of the film, Jania receives a call from her mother, who tells her that the FBI is at her house. She then drops a shocking bombshell: Aria, Jania’s daughter, is dead and has been dead for a whole day. Aria had a seizure during the night and was hospitalized, but died in the hospital.
A series of flashbacks from that day follow, and viewers learn that Jania actually lived that day as if Aria was still alive. That’s why the principal was surprised to see her at school, and why Aria’s backpack was still at home. The call Jania received from the school while she was at work was actually about overdue bills, but Jania was too far gone to accept reality. She lived in her own world, while her mind suppressed the trauma of her daughter’s death.
Nicole also acknowledges that the police informed Jania that Aria had died, and therefore was aware that Jania was experiencing a psychotic crisis.
Taraji admitted that she was «blown away» when reading the script and was surprised by the ending, just like the viewers. Speaking with Decider in an interview published on June 6, 2025, the actress noted that everything «made sense in [her character’s] actions».
«Because it showed me that she had broken a long time ago. She broke the day before this», - Taraji explained. «She was just on autopilot. She wasn’t even in her body, honestly. I just played the honesty of her life as if nothing had happened».
