The next film in the Lord of the Rings series will be co-written by two big fans of the franchise: Stephen Colbert and his son! This was announced in March 2026 through a video posted by Peter Jackson on social media, which was shared by Warner Bros., the company distributing the film scheduled for 2027.
In the video released on March 25, 2026, Jackson stated that he wanted to share updates about the film «The Hunt for Gollum».
«The script is coming together very well, and I think it’s going to be a really good movie», - the director said before introducing Colbert as his writing partner.
«You know what the books mean to me and what your films mean to me», - the late-night show host told Jackson. «But I kept coming back to the six chapters at the beginning of [The Fellowship of the Ring] that you never adapted into the first film. Essentially, those are the chapters 'Three's Company' and 'A Misty Mountain.' And I thought, 'Oh, wait, maybe this could become a separate story that fits into the larger narrative. Can we create something that is completely true to the books but also completely true to the films you’ve already made?'»
