He’s alive! Trust Guillermo del Toro to bring Frankenstein back in a completely new, terrifyingly creative way. At the end of 2025, a new Frankenstein movie with an all-star cast based directly on Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel will be released on Netflix.
«The most important figure from English heritage — amazingly, for me — is a teenager named Mary Shelley, and she remains as important to me in my life as if she were part of my family», - Guillermo said, according to Netflix Tudum. «And so many times, when I want to give up, when I think about giving up, when people tell me that dreaming of the movies and stories I dream of is impossible, I think of her».
Guillermo’s Frankenstein will debut on Netflix in November 2025. The exact premiere date is not yet clear.
During the Netflix Tudum 2025 event: Live, a trailer for Frankenstein was released. Although it’s just a brief compilation of scenes, fans can hold onto it while they wait for the official release date.
While the story of creating a monster usually takes a more horrifying turn in Hollywood interpretations, Guillermo said that his version is not a thriller.
«Someone asked me the other day, 'Are there really scary scenes in it?' - said the director during a conversation at the Cannes Film Festival with composer Alexandre Desplat. «For the first time, I thought about it. It’s an emotional story for me. It’s as personal as anything else. I ask the question of what it means to be a father, to be a son… I’m not making a horror movie — never. I’m not trying to do that».
The cast of the 2025 Frankenstein movie includes some of the biggest names in show business. Oscar Isaac plays the lead role of Victor Frankenstein, Jacob Elordi plays the monster of Frankenstein, and Mia Goth plays Elizabeth Lavenza, Victor’s fiancée.
Also in the cast of the 2025 Frankenstein movie are Christian Convery as young Victor, Christoph Waltz as Dr. Pretorius, Felix Kammerer as William, Lars Mikkelsen as Captain Anderson, David Bradley as the Blind Man, and Ralph Ineson as Professor Krempe
