New Senate leader: who will replace Mitch McConnell?

President-elect Donald Trump quickly began appointing many loyal Republican supporters to key government positions — some of which have sparked controversy — following the three-way election on Wednesday for the next Republican Senate leader, with Trump emphasizing the importance of swift action and loyalty from the person occupying this role.
Here’s what you need to know about who will replace Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and become a key player in the Republican triple government.
Republican senators John Thune of South Dakota, John Cornyn of Texas, and Rick Scott of Florida vied for the top leadership position in the U.S. Senate after McConnell’s decision to step down from his post after a record 18 years in that position.
When Trump demanded X and Truth Social, stating that «any Republican senator seeking the coveted LEADERSHIP position in the U.S. Senate must agree to Recess Appointments (in the Senate!)», all candidates quickly responded, signaling their readiness to comply with this requirement. This move will change some control mechanisms, as recess appointments allow the president to temporarily appoint officials without Senate confirmation.
A 2014 Supreme Court decision limited the president’s authority to make such appointments, and the Senate has not allowed them since.
In a closed vote on Wednesday, Thune emerged as the winner in the race for Republican Senate leader. The secret voting process likely provided political cover for Republicans concerned about not falling out of favor with Trump’s most loyal supporters.
When Trump made his demand for recess appointments clear, Thune responded: «We must act quickly and decisively to place the president’s cabinet and other nominees in positions as soon as possible to begin fulfilling the mandate that was sent to us, and all options are on the table… including recess appointments».
Republicans gained control of the House, securing exactly 218 seats, compared to the Democrats' 208. The victory was solidified by key wins in Arizona, as well as a late surge in California, where results were also coming in slowly on Wednesday.
However, with nine undecided races in the House, the final size of the Republican majority remains unknown
