The Catholic Church elected its new pope on May 8, 2025, to replace the late Pope Francis. Former Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost is now known as Pope Leo XIV, and this man from Chicago has already made history in his pontificate. Addressing the world on that day, Leo emphasized peace for all and honored his predecessor.

As everyone gets to know Pope Leo, Hollywood Life has gathered five facts about the newly elected pontiff below.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, on September 14, 1955, Robert is the first American to serve in the papacy. Although his first language was likely English, Pope Leo can speak several languages, including Spanish, Italian, French, and Portuguese.

At the time of May 2025, the pontiff was 69 years old.

In 1977, Robert graduated from Villanova University in Pennsylvania with a degree in mathematics. That same year, he decided to dedicate his life to the priesthood and joined the Order of Saint Augustine.

Pope Leo holds citizenship in both the USA and Peru, where in the 1980s he served as a pastor, diocesan official, and seminary teacher. From 2015 to 2023, he worked as the bishop of Chiclayo in Peru. He then became a cardinal.
