The latest portrait of Princess Kate has sparked controversy among fans. The image, commissioned by Tatler magazine, was released on Wednesday, May 22, and features a painting of Kate, 42, against a blue background, wearing a long white dress, a silver crown, and a blue sash. The magazine presented the portrait through social media as part of the July 2024 cover issue.
«This recent portrait is a continuation of Tatler’s July 2022 cover with Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee and King Charles III’s Coronation July cover», - the post on Instagram from Tatler read. «Both portraits inspired a new residency at Akoje in collaboration with the King’s Fund, for African, Caribbean, and diasporic artists to spend time at the King’s estate, Dumfries House in Scotland, focusing on their artistic practice».
In response to the post, many social media users criticized the painting, with many claiming it does not resemble the Princess of Wales at all.
«This portrait is awful, there are so many amazing artists, surely they could have found a better one», - wrote one commentator. «What a terrible portrait for a beautiful woman», - added another.
One person went further and wrote, «Who is making decisions on these commissions? Portraits are getting stranger and stranger. This is quite amateurish, doesn’t look like Her Royal Highness. Given what she’s been through, I think this will make her have a good laugh».
The third commentator likely referred to Kate’s battle with cancer, which the royal revealed in a video address in March. After a previous operation on her abdomen in January, she was eventually diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer. In her public statement, Kate acknowledged that this is why she has not been seen in public for months.
«As you can imagine, it took time», - Kate said in the video. «It took me time to recover from major surgery, to start treatment. But most importantly, it took us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte, and Louis in a way that was appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I would be okay».
Kate shares her children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, with her husband, Prince William. At the end of her address, Kate noted that she looks forward to returning to work when her medical team allows it.
«We hope you understand that as a family, we need a little time, space, and privacy right now while I finish my treatment», - she concluded. «My work has always brought me deep joy, and I look forward to returning when I can. But right now, I need to focus on full recovery»
