After the worldwide success of the prequel novel and film about Coriolanus Snow, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, author Suzanne Collins and Lionsgate announced that the film is in development.

The fifth book in the series takes place during the Second Quarter Quell, the 50th Hunger Games. Since fans met Katniss Everdeen in the 74th games, Sunrise on the Reaping takes place almost 25 years before the Mockingjay changes Panem.
«The Second Quarter Quell is legendary and casts a shadow on the history of the Games, even in the time of Katniss Everdeen a quarter century later», - said Adam Fogelson of Lionsgate, according to The Hollywood Reporter. «Like fans around the world, we are eagerly anticipating this exciting return to Panem».
The story follows 16-year-old Haymitch, who lives in District Twelve with his mother and younger brother. After Haymitch suddenly becomes a tribute in the 50th Hunger Games, readers learn how his traumatic past haunts him in the future as an alcoholic.
The film is directed by franchise veteran Francis Lawrence, with a premiere date set for November 20, 2026.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping stars Australian actor Joseph Zada, who plays 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy in his first Hollywood role. He is joined by Gossip Girl and Hocus Pocus 2 star Whitney Peak, who plays Lenore Dove Baird, Haymitch’s friend and fellow from District Twelve.
Mckenna Grace, known for her work in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, The Handmaid’s Tale, and Gifted, plays the role of Maisie Donner, another tribute from District Twelve and Haymitch’s ally in the arena. The cast also includes Jesse Plemons, known for his roles in Power of the Dog and Breaking Bad, who plays Plutarch Heavensbee, a rising figure in the Capitol whose influence shapes the future of Panem. Maya Hawke, daughter of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, plays Vairiss.
