The new trailer for the movie «Wicked» reveals several key moments featuring Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, and Ariana’s boyfriend, Ethan Slater. Based on the original Broadway musical, the upcoming film serves as a prequel to «The Wizard of Oz». The trailer begins with an invitation for viewers to «uncover everything that happened before Dorothy».
At the start of the trailer, released on Thursday, September 5th, viewers hear Ariana’s character, Glinda, addressing the citizens of Oz: «Fellow Ozians, the Wicked Witch of the West is dead». Ariana also narrates: «Let me tell you the whole story. Our paths crossed in school. She had her secrets».
The voices of the female leads are then heard performing impressive notes of the song «Defying Gravity», - as the trailer reveals more about Cynthia’s character, Elphaba, who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West.
As scenes of Elphaba play out on screen, an emotional conversation between Ariana, 31, and Cynthia, 37, is shown in the trailer. Their characters share a tearful moment as Glinda puts the black witch hat on Elphaba’s head.
Towards the end of the trailer, Jeff Goldblum’s character, the Wizard, says: «The best way to unite people is to give them a common enemy», - referring to Elphaba.
After Glinda tells Elphaba not to be afraid, Elphaba insists: «The Wizard should be afraid of me». Ethan’s character, Boq, then appears, looking up at the sky as Elphaba flies away on a broomstick.
The cast of «Wicked» is gearing up for the highly anticipated release. Earlier this week, Ariana shared a selfie from the set where she and Cynthia were in costume. In her Instagram caption, the «Break Free» singer wrote: «80 days», - referring to the film’s release.
This is the first glimpse featuring Ethan’s character. He and Ariana began dating in the summer of 2023 after working together on the film.
Part 1 of «Wicked» will be released in theaters on November 22nd. Part 2 will be released on November 26th, 2025
