All eyes are on New York as city residents rank their favorite candidates for mayor in the elections. While the Big Apple is gearing up to either keep current mayor Eric Adams or dismiss him, former governor Andrew Cuomo has risen in polls as the favorite among Democrats — despite his 2021 sexual harassment scandal that led to his resignation. Meanwhile, Zohran Mamdani has gained enough support among young voters, unlike Cuomo.
Mamdani has been vocal on the issue of the housing affordability crisis in the city, among other issues. At a recent event, he told the BBC: «This is a city where one in four people live in poverty, a city where 500,000 children go to bed hungry every night. And ultimately, it’s a city that is at risk of losing what makes it so special».
But many criticize the Democrat for some of his arguments and his lack of political experience. Cuomo himself even said that «experience, competence, the ability to do the job, the ability to deal with [Donald] Trump, the ability to deal with Washington, the ability to deal with the state legislature» are the «basics» of being the mayor of New York.
