Accusations of indecent assault against Harvey Weinstein have been dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in the UK. Frank Ferguson, head of the CPS special crimes and counterterrorism division, explained that the case against the 72-year-old disgraced former film producer is no longer a realistic prospect of conviction.
«After reviewing the evidence in this case, the CPS has decided to discontinue the criminal prosecution of Harvey Weinstein», - Ferguson said in a statement on Thursday, September 5, according to The Hollywood Reporter. «The CPS is obligated to constantly review all cases, and we have determined that there is no longer a realistic prospect of conviction. We have explained our decision to all parties».
Ferguson added that the department «will always support any potential victims of sexual violence to come forward and report to the police», - adding that they «will pursue the case if our legal test is met».
In June 2022, the CPS brought charges against Weinstein for alleged crimes against a woman that occurred in 1996. He was accused by the London police of two instances of indecent assault against an unidentified woman.
This is Weinstein’s latest legal victory. Previously, he served a 23-year prison sentence for his conviction of rape in New York in 2020. However, this conviction was overturned earlier this year, and preparations are underway for a new trial. The former film producer was also convicted in Los Angeles in 2022 on three charges of sexual assault against former model Yevgenia Chernyshova. Weinstein was sentenced to 16 years in prison, but he has filed an appeal.
The entire film industry has shunned Weinstein after over 100 people came forward with allegations of sexual assault and harassment against him. Some of the accusations date back to the 1970s.
After the New York appellate court overturned Weinstein’s conviction this year, several celebrities condemned the decision. The most vocal public figures were Ashley Judd and Rose McGowan.
Weinstein denies the allegations of non-consensual sexual contact.
