Oklahoma is experiencing severe weather conditions.

Late Wednesday night, a severe thunderstorm warning from the National Weather Service for southern Oklahoma County, northwestern Cleveland County, and northwestern McClain County escalated to a tornado warning. Extreme weather, characterized by large hail and gusty winds, has led to widespread power outages. This comes against the backdrop of several days of wildfires across the state.

Here’s what you need to know.

The following counties in Oklahoma are included in the tornado warning:

How long does the tornado warning last?

According to meteorologist Travis Meyer, here are the time frames for the main threats:

The National Weather Service in Norman, located 20 miles south of downtown Oklahoma City, warned that multiple tornadoes are possible, as well as tennis ball-sized hail, wind gusts up to 75 miles per hour, and evening temperatures reaching the mid-70s.

John Porter from AccuWeather warns that conditions are extremely favorable for a significant tornado outbreak on the southern plains, saying, «All the necessary ingredients are here today». He cautions that storms could generate winds exceeding 80 miles per hour and produce «supercell» tornadoes — powerful, long-lasting storms capable of causing widespread destruction.

«These tornadoes can be particularly intense and long-lasting», - Porter explained. «They have the potential to last for 45 minutes to an hour or longer, leaving behind paths of destruction». Residents in affected areas are advised to seek shelter immediately upon receiving warnings and to closely monitor updates as conditions change
