The Olympic Games officially began, and the first weekend ended with the USA team swimming to the top.
Swimming has always been a highly anticipated sport due to the records set by past Olympians. According to the official Olympic Games website, «Swimming competitions at the Olympic Games are held in a 50-meter pool. The four styles of Olympic swimming competitions — both individual and relay races — are breaststroke, butterfly, backstroke, and freestyle; freestyle is predominantly used in freestyle races, and therefore the term freestyle is often used as a synonym for freestyle».
During this event, both men and women took the top 3 spots in several rounds. On Saturday, July 27, US swimmer Katie Ledecky won a bronze medal in the women’s 400-meter freestyle, and the women’s team won a silver medal in the 4×400-meter freestyle relay, coming in second place.
Torri Huske and Gretchen Walsh were the stars of the weekend, as they took the first two spots in the women’s 100-meter butterfly on Sunday, July 28 — Torri won the gold medal, and Gretchen was awarded the silver medal. The first-place winner clocked in at 55.59 seconds, while the second-place finish was close behind at 55.63 seconds.

With her victory, 21-year-old Huske lifted her partner onto the podium to celebrate with the national anthem. She expressed her disbelief after the race, saying, «I feel like I’m in shock right now… I don’t even know how to process this, I feel like I’m going to cry, but I’m also smiling. It’s really unreal. Like you said, last time I just missed the podium by a hundredth of a second, so I’m so grateful to be here and to do this with Gretchen — it’s just amazing».
The men also had their moment of glory. Nick Fink won a silver medal in the men’s 400-meter individual medley, while Carson Foster secured a bronze medal in a separate race, and the USA team won a gold medal in the 4×400-meter freestyle relay
