Congratulations to Olivia Mann and John Malani as they expand their family!
On September 22, the 44-year-old actress and 42-year-old comedian took to social media to share photos of their new daughter, born via surrogacy on September 14. They included images of themselves holding her in the hospital and captured their first days together.
«May June Malani was born on September 14, 2024, the year of the dragon», - Mann captioned her post on Instagram.
She expressed her complex and «deep» feelings about not being able to carry her daughter, sharing: «When I first met our surrogate mother, we talked like mothers. She showed me so much mercy and understanding; I knew I had found a true angel. Words cannot express my gratitude for keeping our child safe for 9 months and making our dreams come true».
Mann also shared the meaning of her daughter’s name: «I am so proud of my little plum, my little dragon for making the journey to be with us. My heart exploded». She explained, «May (pronounced as may) means plum in Chinese».
Malani also posted on his Instagram, writing: «May June Malani was born on September 14, 2024, the year of the dragon 🐉». With humor, he added, «We stole so many things from the hospital», - and concluded, «I love my little girl so much».
Their new addition joins their son Malcolm Hiepu Malani, 2 years old, whom they welcomed on November 24, 2021. The couple, who started dating in 2021, recently got married in July during an intimate ceremony at a friend’s home in New York. A source told PEOPLE that the only attendees were Malcolm and a witness for signing the marriage certificate.
This news came after Mann announced on March 13 that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She shared her diagnosis on Instagram, hoping to bring comfort and support to others on similar paths. After the diagnosis, Mann underwent a double mastectomy and hysterectomy as part of her treatment.
In an interview with Vogue, Mann mentioned that she froze her eggs three times throughout her life — at the ages of 33, 39, and 42 — after the diagnosis. She expressed her readiness for surrogacy and her desire to continue expanding her family.
«When you are pregnant with your child, it’s like teamwork — you and the child work together to make their little life a reality», - she said. «With a surrogate mother, you have to find someone you trust as much as yourself to live their life as a pregnant woman just like you would».
«This journey has made me realize how grateful I am for the opportunities not only to fight cancer but also to have more children if we want, because I know that many people do not have such opportunities», - she added
