Olivia Mann opens up about her recovery after being diagnosed with breast cancer, which led to a double mastectomy. In a new interview with PEOPLE magazine published on Thursday, April 18, the actress recalled the emotions she felt in the first days after the surgery.

«When I woke up, it was very painful, and I was really out of it, and I really lost a lot of blood, and my surgery, which was supposed to last 8 hours, lasted 10 hours because of this blood loss», - said Olivia, 43, to the publication. «So the first part is tough because it’s a lot of pain. You’ve gone through a huge surgery, and then I really didn’t think about what I had lost because I was completely bandaged up».

Three days after the mastectomy, Olivia was able to return home and reunite with her son Malcolm, 2, whom she shares with partner John Malani.

While the actress from the show «Newsroom» was happy to see her child (then 1 year old), Olivia quickly realized that she couldn’t do everything that was usual.

«Malcolm ran up and said, 'Mom, pick me up?' And I said, 'Oh, I can’t pick you up.' And I sat down to hug him, and then he just sat on my leg and said, 'But mom, pick me up!'» Olivia recalled. «That was probably one of the hardest moments, because all you want to do is pick up your child».

Another difficult moment came when Malcolm realized that his mom was spending a lot of time resting in bed.

«Once I asked Malcolm, 'Where does dad work?' And he ran to his office and pointed to his desk», - Olivia said. «And I said, 'Where does mom work?' And he ran to my bed, and it crushed me».

As Olivia experiences menopause due to breast cancer treatment, she says she finds more energy. She also creates more happy memories with her growing son. Ultimately, the best medicine may simply be quality family time.

«When I’m with Malcolm, it’s really the only time when your brain isn’t thinking about being sick», - explained Olivia. «I'm just so happy with him. I’m just so happy in life. I mean, he’s such a fun little person. He’s so social and happy and laughs so much. And it really puts a lot into perspective».

She continued: «If my body is changing, I’m still his mom. If I have hot flashes, I’m still his mom. If I lose my hair, I’m still his mom. That’s what’s really important to me, I can be here for him»
