Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King are just allies of the LGBTQ+ community.
As revealed in an interview with Melinda French Gates in the series «Moments That Define Us» on Wednesday, July 24, the duo, who have been friends for almost 50 years, spoke with Gates about their relationship and emphasized that if there was anything else to tell, they would do so.
«I think we’ve shared almost everything, and I would have to say it wasn’t even a matter of navigating», - Winfrey said about their connection.
«You know, for years people have said we’re gay, and listen», - Oprah recalled. «[We've] always dealt with that. And people can still think that».
Gayle then interjected about how it affected their personal lives.
«I used to say [to Oprah], 'You need to do a show on this,' «Gayle added. «Because it’s hard enough for me to get a date on a Saturday night when people think we’re gay».
Gayle, who raises children Kirby, 38, and William Jr., 37, with ex-husband William Bumpus, emphasized the struggle of continuing rumors, noting, «If we were gay, we would tell you».
Winfrey then pointed out that she believes these rumors persist because people «aren't used to seeing women with such a genuine alliance».
«The reason I think our friendship has worked is because Gayle is happier—not happy—for me in any success or victory I go through than I am myself», - Oprah said.
Oprah and Gayle’s bond has proven its strength over nearly 50 years. It began when both women worked at WJZ-TV in Baltimore.
«We connected because we had very similar philosophies», - Gayle reflected. «We were so synchronized in so many different things, and I had never met anyone like that».
Oprah, who met her lifelong partner Stedman Graham in 1986, built an empire with The Oprah Winfrey Show, which ran for 25 years until 2011. And Gayle was happy to be by her side through it all.
«Who wouldn’t want to be her best friend?» Gayle previously said in an interview with the New York Times.
«If I didn’t think I brought something to the table, or if I wasn’t confident enough in myself, then maybe it would bother me. But, you know, I anchored the news for a long time. I won three Emmys. I’ve proven I can do this. I never feel like I’m in her shadow. I feel like I’m in her light, that’s how I see it»
