Less than ten years after the original animation made a splash, Disney is releasing its live-action version of «Moana» next year! With almost an entirely new cast, the film will explore the same storyline as the 2016 film, and Dwayne «The Rock» Johnson will return as Maui. So who else is in the ensemble?
Without further ado, meet the main cast of Disney’s live-action «Moana» here!
Dwayne returns to his iconic role as Maui, a playful character inspired by the Polynesian mythological figure Maui. The animated character is best known for his memorable song «You're Welcome» from the original 2016 film.
As most fans already know, Dwayne is a professional wrestler turned actor, whose roles include «Superagent», «The Game Plan», «San Andreas», «Baywatch» and the «Jumanji» films. However, Dwayne has recently expanded his horizons and played more dramatic roles, such as in the film «Rampage».
A newcomer to the big screen, Catherine LaGai’a is only 17 years old when she landed the role in the live-action «Moana», and she hails from Australia.
John Tui plays Moana’s father, Chief Tui, in the film and has been seen in various film and television roles over the years. He has appeared in minor and supporting roles in films such as «Battleship», «The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies», «Solo: A Star Wars Story» and «Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw».
Frankie Adams plays the role of Sina, Moana’s mother. The Samoan-New Zealand actress has been seen in a number of films and TV shows throughout her career, including «Mortal Engines», «Shortland Street», «The Expanse», «Panthers» and «The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart», in which Catherine also appeared.
Rena Owen portrays the role of Tala, Moana’s grandmother, and is known for her memorable performances in films such as «Once Were Warriors» and «Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones»
