Eight months before brothers Erik Menendez and Lyle Menendez shot their parents, Jose and Mary Louise «Kitty» Menendez, in August 1989, Erik wrote a letter to his late cousin Andy Cano. The Menendez brothers and their family had previously disclosed the existence of this letter. However, on October 16, 2024, the Los Angeles County prosecutor revealed the contents of the letter.
According to Fox News, the signatures along with the contents of the letter acknowledged that prosecutor George Gascon «considers it his moral and ethical obligation to review the Menendez brothers' case».
«It has been 35 years since their conviction», - the signature read, according to the publication. «It is time to determine whether these people have paid their debts to society. Erik and Lyle Menendez have spent most of their lives behind bars and will continue to do so until we can ensure a review and restoration of justice for all».
Below is what Erik wrote to his cousin in the discovered letter.
Erik and Lyle killed their parents in August 1989 because, as claimed, they had been subjected to emotional, physical, and sexual abuse throughout their childhood.
In addition to the letter written by Erik to his cousin, in recent years another piece of evidence against Jose has emerged. Roy Rossello, a former member of the Puerto Rican group Menudo, claimed that Jose sexually assaulted him in his teenage years. In the 2023 documentary series «Menendez + Menudo: Betrayed Boys», - Roy stated that he was drugged and raped by Menendez’s father.
During Menudo’s rise to fame, Jose was the executive director of RCA Records.
According to many sources, Erik wrote to his cousin: «I tried to avoid dad. It’s still happening, Andy, but now it’s worse for me», - he wrote. «I never know when it’s going to happen, and it drives me crazy. Every night I stay awake, thinking he might come in [sic]».
Erik’s letter to Andy, reportedly, was found by his aunt nine years ago. Andy passed away in 2003.
In light of the new evidence in the Menendez brothers' case, Lyle and Erik have been granted a new court hearing scheduled for November 29, 2024.
