«Chris and Selena’s Relationship: From Love to Tragedy and Reunion»

In the first part of the series «Selena: The Series», - Chris Perez crossed paths with Selena Quintanilla and joined her group. They fell in love while working together, but everything fell apart at the end of the season when her father fired him upon learning of their relationship. Chris and Selena’s relationship began in secret. Initially, they decided to hide their romance from her father, Abraham, and the rest of the family. Eventually, their relationship became public, and Abraham fired him. But that didn’t stop Chris and Selena from being together. They got married in 1992. After that, he was accepted into the family. However, their marriage was not always perfect. «We were married and together 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We had to learn to deal with that, and it was difficult for both of us», - Chris told CNN in 2012. «It's not like she came up with the idea and I resisted it, because honestly, I was on her side».
Chris and Selena first met in 1989 when he joined Selena y Los Dinos as their guitarist. He was with the group initially until 1991 when Abraham found out about their relationship. He returned to the group after marrying Selena in 1992. He was with the group until Selena’s death in 1995. Before the release of the first season, Chris reminisced about his love for Selena and her group.
«I loved her music even before joining the group», - Chris wrote on Instagram. «I was drawn to the fact that her brother had his name on everything as a producer. Keyboardist Ricky Vela was my hero musically. Her father managed an amazing sound when I went to see them at an event in San Antonio. I learned a lot by taking on the parts of their guitarist Roger Garcia and trying to stretch them even further. They had a girl drummer who brought the heat (Suzette is really cool). Joe and Pete added 'something else' and gave a completely different dimension, Pete wrote amazing lyrics… and they sounded powerful. I forever respect the group and the people involved in it».
Selena was tragically shot and killed by Yolanda Saldivar in a motel on March 31, 1995, at the age of 23. In his book «To Selena, with Love», - Chris revealed that Yolanda had tried to lure Selena to the motel the day before her murder. After her death, Chris felt guilty for not being able to protect Selena. «A lot of it. A lot (of guilt) was swirling in my head», - he told the Houston Chronicle in 2012. «But when something happens so quickly and the way it happened, I think it’s natural for most people to feel the same way. The reason for such an incident is that no one expected it to happen. We didn’t think this person was capable of what she did».
Chris remained close to Selena’s family after her death. He was there when Selena was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2017.
Chris married Vanessa Villanueva in 2001. They started dating in 1998 and have two children. The couple divorced in 2008.
He founded the Chris Perez Band in 1998. The band’s debut studio album, «Resurrection», - was released in 1999 and won a Grammy for «Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album». The band’s last album, «Another Night», - was released in 2000. After that, the band disbanded. Chris joined Selena’s brother’s band, Kumbia All-Starz, in 2005. He then formed his own band again, the Chris Perez Project
