«When we chose Owen, I thought, 'Oh, I need to make sure he can really do this,'» the director said. «So we brought people in to work with him while I was working on other episodes. There was an acting teacher who helped him with the text and helped him express himself. Honestly, the first day on set was very tense for all of us. But he just blew me away. Actors train for years and still can’t achieve what Owen did, which is mainly about being in the moment, listening, and being sincere».
Owen was 14 years old when he played his 13-year-old character.
During an interview with Philip in March 2025, Owen admitted that he had «literally» no acting experience before «Adolescence».
«I really wanted to start an acting career a couple of years ago. It’s not that long ago», - Owen told the publication. «I grew up dreaming of becoming a footballer. I don’t know what made me want this, but I just did. Then I took lessons and I liked it. Then I got into a small agency, and I got a request for a self-tape audition for 'Adolescence.' And it all started from there».
Discussing The Drama Mob agency, Owen noted that he took «hourly lessons on Tuesdays, where we took a piece of the script and just read it». The newcomer to Hollywood added: «But I was just doing it for fun and didn’t expect much from it. And when 'Adolescence' came along, I definitely took it much more seriously. And I just took it in stride and did it».
Owen was cast in his next major role in the film «Wuthering Heights» alongside Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi.
