For decades, the name Murda was a symbol of power and prestige in Lowcountry South Carolina. But in a dramatic downfall, legal proceedings, convictions, and financial scandals have destroyed this legacy of Alex Murda. As the courts sort through his remaining assets and victims seek compensation, the true extent of the family’s fortune is now under intense scrutiny.

In recent months, a limited Hulu series called «Murda: Death in the Family» has revived public interest in the rise and fall of the dynasty. Learn more about it below.

Murda was once a prominent lawyer from South Carolina from the dynastic Lowcountry family that had influence over local legal and political systems. Over time, he became embroiled in scandals involving embezzlement, insurance fraud, and abuse of power, culminating in the murders of his wife and son.

Yes, in March 2023, a jury found Murda guilty of the murders of his wife Maggie and their son Paul in June 2021.

He is serving two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole in a maximum-security prison in South Carolina. In April 2024, he was also sentenced to 40 years in federal prison for financial crimes, which will be served concurrently with his existing sentences.

Before his downfall, Alex’s net worth was estimated at around $ 1 million, although much of it was not liquidated, and his assets have since been confiscated or sold. Their family estate, Moselle, spanning 1770 acres, was sold for $ 3.9 million in 2023; most of it was used to settle civil suits.

The courts have been sorting through Alex’s remaining assets — approximately $ 1.7−1.8 million — distributing them among the victims of civil suits and the 2019 Mallory Beach boat crash.

Alex’s surviving son, Buster Murda, continues to live in South Carolina and remains mostly out of the public eye, although he testified in defense of his father during the trial. According to reports, he married his longtime girlfriend Brooklyn White in May 2025
