Memory of Michael Jackson: Janet’s sister recalls their collaboration

Even 15 years after his death, Michael Jackson is still remembered by his loving family.
The King of Pop passed away in June 2009, leaving the world shocked by his departure, but seeing how his legacy continues through his family. Recently, his sister Janet Jackson reminisced about the times when they wrote music together. Growing up in a very musical family, their family group The Jackson 5 was iconic.
When they embarked on solo careers, the brothers and sisters eventually collaborated on the hit «Scream». Released in 1995, the song was a huge success, with a futuristic black and white video in the music video.
To this day, the 58-year-old singer of «Rhythm Nation» performs this track and uses footage from the video to show her brother singing during the tour. She recalled during an interview with the BBC: «Mike and I wrote this song in New York, in his apartment… So [I experience] this whole trip, listening to him sing this [and remembering], what he was going through at the time. And I’m just, his little sister, always there with him, and being that support. That’s always been my role».
Not everything seen on camera reflects the reality behind the scenes. Despite the fun on set, Janet revealed that the King of Pop was going through a difficult time. «Mike was going through a lot, and I think it started to show on him… Mike was shooting at night; I was shooting during the day. His record company blocked his entire set so I couldn’t see what was going on. They didn’t want me on set. I felt like they were trying to make it very competitive between us. It really hurt me because I felt like I was there to fight with him, not against him», - she said in her documentary series *Janet*, released in 2022.
Even in difficult times, Michael noted in an interview with MTV in 1995 that he was «very, very honored» after seeing the success of the song and being nominated for 11 awards at the MTV Video Music Awards ceremony
