Princess Diana was notable for her charm and grace, easily connecting with people despite turbulent relationships within the royal family and intense public attention.

She tragically died on August 31, 1997 in a car accident in Paris, at the young age of 36.

Nevertheless, she continues to hold a significant place in the hearts and minds of fans, friends, and family.

Today on Instagram, Diana’s longtime friend Sarah Ferguson, 64, posted a photo of herself standing next to Diana on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, watching the parade in honor of the Battle of Britain anniversary on September 15, 1990.

She captioned the photo: «Happy birthday, my dear friend, Diana. You were a pillar of light and love. And what a legacy you left. I will always remember our laughter and the soul connection I found in you. I am sure you are always watching over us. Rest in peace, my friend».

Princess Diana and Ferguson became stepsisters through their marriages to future King Charles and Prince Andrew, but they were close friends from a young age.

In 2023, the Duchess of York shared memories in an interview with The View, expressing how much she misses her friend.

«I miss my friend so much, because she was more of a mother to me than my own mother, and she was just incredible. She was so forgiving and never judged me, and she always told me, 'Just be yourself, Sarah. You will be okay one day'»
