Late «Cheers» alum George Wendt is remembered for his comedic portrayal of Norm Peterson, and his death naturally broke the hearts of fans in May 2025. Although the cause of death was not immediately disclosed, Wendt had experienced several health problems in recent years. He preferred to keep his personal life private.

«George was a caring family man, a well-loved friend, and a trusted face for all those lucky enough to know him», - Wendt’s representative told The Hollywood Reporter. «He will be greatly missed. The family requests privacy at this time».

Wendt is best known for his role as Norm Peterson throughout all 11 seasons of the series «Cheers». From 1982 to 1993, Wendt starred in «Cheers» and was nominated for several Emmy Awards in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. The sitcom also received 28 Emmy Awards and was repeatedly nominated during its run.

After the series ended, he appeared in the short-lived sitcom «The George Wendt Show», - and then in films such as «Airplane II: The Sequel», - «A Small Romantic Adventure», - «Little Rascals», - «Spice World», - and «Santa Buddies».

Wendt was 76 years old when he passed away in May 2025.

Wendt rarely spoke about his health, but in November 2024, he was seen visiting a dialysis center in Los Angeles, as reported by the Daily Mail. As seen in published photos, Wendt was in a wheelchair at the time.

Earlier, Wendt was hospitalized for chest pains in 2012, according to multiple sources. At that time, reports say he underwent coronary bypass surgery after a narrowed artery was found in his system.

During the filming of «Cheers», - Wendt and his castmates had to drink fake, non-alcoholic, and quite salty «beer», - as he revealed in a 1985 interview with The Washington Post.

«I was drinking it the whole time. It not only tastes disgusting, I was afraid of dying from high blood pressure», - Wendt said at the time. «Then I realized I didn’t have to drink all those drinks. It was only important when the camera was on me. It took a couple of years, but now I watched the camera. That’s how I make money. That’s what acting is».

The cause of Wendt’s death is still unknown at the time of publication, but according to multiple sources, the late actor passed away peacefully in his sleep
