Maggie Smith is best known for her performances in the series «Downton Abbey» and the Harry Potter films, but the late actress began her career in the entertainment industry a decade ago. Since the news of her death became known in September 2024, fans of the English actress are saddened by the loss of an icon. Remembering Maggie’s legacy in the film industry, we recall the role she played in the Harry Potter franchise.

Maggie played the role of Professor Minerva McGonagall. In the book and film franchise, the professor is the head of Gryffindor house at Hogwarts. She is also the deputy headmistress along with headmaster Albus Dumbledore at the school.

A defining moment for Professor McGonagall was the end of the series in the film «Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2», - when she prepared the entire school for Voldemort’s wrath.

Maggie’s family announced her death on September 27, 2024, and confirmed in their statement that she passed away in the hospital in the morning.

«She was a person who preferred to keep her personal space, and was surrounded by friends and family in her final moments», - said Maggie’s sons, Toby and Chris. «She leaves behind two sons and five grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their outstanding mother and grandmother».

The cause of Maggie’s death is currently unknown. She had previously battled Graves' disease as well as breast cancer.

Some of Maggie’s colleagues expressed their condolences upon learning of her death. Actress Bonnie Wright, who played Ginny Weasley, posted a touching message on Instagram.

«Our dear and respected head of Gryffindor house, you will be greatly missed by us, the Harry Potter community», - wrote Bonnie. «My favorite scene with Maggie was when we all learned to dance for the Yule Ball. She embodied the perfect balance of cheekiness and care that McGonagall possesses. She kept the Gryffindors on their toes. My deepest condolences to Maggie’s family at this time»
