Every two years, people from all over the world tune in for the opening of the Olympic Games to mark the official start of the competition.
The opening ceremony is always different — this year especially. For the first time in the history of the modern Olympic Games, the ceremony will take place not in a stadium, but along the Seine River.
Instead of delegations marching, they will float along the Seine River, passing by Paris landmarks including the Louvre and Notre Dame. National pride will be fully displayed during the Parade of Nations, when athletes and officials from competing countries make their grand entrance in matching uniforms, usually in the colors of their home country, led by appointed flag bearers.
After the procession of athletes — 10,500 people from 184 countries — who will «parade» along the nearly 4-mile water route, the celebration will continue with the symbolic release of doves, official speeches, and the Olympic anthem to mark the opening of the Games.
Here is what you need to know about the order of countries in the Parade of Nations at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
With the exception of special cases — such as Greece, traditionally starting the parade, and host countries appearing last — the order of countries in the Parade of Nations is determined alphabetically according to the language of the host country.
For example, Germany, «l'Allemagne» in French, will appear before China, «la Chine».
Greece is the source of the ancient Olympic Games, so traditionally it goes first in the Parade of Nations, according to the International Olympic Committee (IOC)
