Patricia Krenwinkel, a former follower of the infamous cult leader Charles Manson, has received preliminary approval for parole after nearly six decades in prison for her involvement in the Tate-LaBianca murders in 1969. On October 6, 2023, the 78-year-old Krenwinkel was recommended for release for the third time, according to information from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
The decision on whether to grant parole now rests with California Governor Gavin Newsom. The department stated that all decisions regarding parole are preliminary and become final only after a thorough and comprehensive review by the Board of Parole Hearings and the governor.
The governor has previously overturned two decisions to grant Krenwinkel parole, the most recent being in October 2025. Newsom noted her efforts toward personal improvement in prison but ultimately decided that she poses a potential risk to society if released.
Krenwinkel was convicted of murder along with other members of the Manson family in the killings of actress Sharon Tate, who was eight months pregnant, as well as other victims in August 1969. She was also convicted for the murders of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, which occurred the following day.
According to a 2022 California parole report, Krenwinkel met Manson at the age of 19 in 1967, becoming his girlfriend and a follower of his cult. At 21, she and three other Manson followers attacked Tate’s home, where she inflicted fatal wounds on Folger.
After the murders, Krenwinkel fled to Alabama but was apprehended and extradited to California in 1970. She was initially sentenced to death, but all death sentences issued before 1972 were overturned by the California Supreme Court, and she was sentenced to life in prison.
Krenwinkel’s attorney, Kit Watley, stated that she fully accepts responsibility for her actions and feels deep remorse. He added that he believes she is ready to return home.
