The Pentagon has released new files on UFOs and UAPs: what is known

The truth may be out there, but the recent release of Pentagon files on UFOs has reignited public interest in what the government knows about unexplained aerial phenomena. In recent years, federal agencies have increasingly used the term «UAP» (unidentified anomalous phenomena) instead of UFO, but the questions remain the same: do aliens exist, and has the government proven this?
On May 8, 2026, the Department of Defense, also known as the Department of War in the terminology of the Donald Trump administration, released a new batch of declassified documents, photographs, and videos related to UAP as part of an ongoing initiative to disclose information related to the Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO). The records include military reports, FBI data, astronaut sightings, and drone operator reports collected over decades.
However, government officials have cautiously noted that these files do not confirm the existence of extraterrestrial life. Read on to learn more about the contents of the files.
Pentagon records on UFOs and UAP are now being published through official government portals associated with the Department of Defense and the National Archives. The Pentagon’s AARO website was created as a central hub for declassified cases, reports, videos, and public updates regarding unexplained aerial phenomena.
Meanwhile, the National Archives is also maintaining a growing collection of UAP records, which includes documents transferred from agencies such as the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the FAA, and the Department of Defense. According to the National Archives, records are being added on a «continuous basis» to maximize transparency for the public.
Reports indicate that the latest release of documents in 2026 included over 160 files covering incidents that occurred over decades. Some of these pertained to strange lights observed near military installations, while others contained transcripts from astronauts and reports of unexplained objects moving at unusual speeds.
In a major AARO report for 2024, reviewing nearly 80 years of government investigations, it was concluded that there is «no verifiable evidence» that any recorded UAP incident is related to extraterrestrial life or technologies from other planets. Officials stated that many sightings were ultimately identified as drones, satellites, or other ordinary objects.
The Pentagon files do not answer the fundamental question of whether intelligent extraterrestrial life exists. Despite the excitement surrounding the release of the files, the Pentagon has repeatedly emphasized that investigators have not found confirmed evidence of extraterrestrial technology or alien spacecraft.
Scientists widely believe that it is statistically possible for life to exist in other parts of the universe, given the vast number of planets beyond Earth. However, there is currently no confirmed public evidence that aliens have visited Earth or that the U.S. government possesses extraterrestrial technology
