Perdue Foods is recalling over 167,000 pounds of frozen chicken nuggets and tenders after customers reported finding metal wires in the products.

According to Perdue and the Food Safety and Inspection Service of the US Department of Agriculture, the recall affects products manufactured in March 2024. The affected items, packaged in vacuum-sealed bags, include 22-ounce packages of Perdue breaded chicken tenders, Butcher Box organic chicken breast nuggets, and Perdue Simply Smart Organics breaded chicken nuggets.

In a statement released on Friday, August 16, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the Department of Agriculture stated: «Perdue Foods LLC, a company in Perry, Georgia, is recalling approximately 167,171 pounds of frozen ready-to-eat chicken nuggets and tenders that may be contaminated with foreign material, specifically metal».

The company, voluntarily recalling its products, noted that the material was «found in a limited number of consumer packages».

In a separate statement, Jeff Shaw, Senior Vice President of Food Safety and Quality at Perdue, explained that the company «identified the material as very thin wire that accidentally entered the production process».

He added: «Out of caution, we have decided to voluntarily recall all of these product packages».

According to the Department of Agriculture, all affected products, distributed nationwide and sold online, have the code P-33944 on the packaging.

As of now, according to FSIS and Perdue, there have been no confirmed injuries or negative reactions related to the consumption of these products. However, FSIS expressed concern that the products may still be in consumers' freezers.

«Consumers who have purchased these products are strongly advised not to consume them», - the official FSIS notification stated. «These products should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase».

A corresponding notification on the Department of Agriculture website warned that «anyone concerned about injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider».

Contamination of products with foreign objects is one of the main reasons for food recalls in the US today. Last November, Tyson Foods recalled nearly 30,000 pounds of chicken nuggets after consumers found metal pieces in dinosaur-shaped products. In addition to metal, plastic shards, stones, insect parts, and other «foreign» materials have also led to recalls after they were found in packaged goods
