The reboot of «Buffy the Vampire Slayer» was in development, but unfortunately, this project is no longer relevant. According to Sarah Michelle Gellar, the new series will not happen. Find out what happened to the «Buffy» project below.
E! News confirmed that Sarah was in talks about bringing back the popular TV series. Searchlight TV and 20th Television had previously referred to the new era of the show as «the next chapter in the Buffy universe».
The script for the show was to be written by «Poker Face» creators Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. At one point, it was expected that Dolly Parton would be a producer on the project. Interestingly, she was also a producer on the original version! Although Sarah did not share details about the project, she noted, «If Dolly Parton calls me, I’m always ready to answer the queen’s call», - according to Us Weekly.
It’s interesting to wonder if Dolly had any influence behind the scenes! Just a day after the news was confirmed, Sarah posted a photo on her Instagram in a sushi pajama that fans remember from the fourth season of the show. She captioned the photo with sushi emojis, and long-time fans immediately understood what this delicious Easter egg was about.
The series was planned to be streamed on Hulu.
According to a video on Instagram that Sarah posted in March 2026, the original star explained that Hulu «decided not to move forward» with the reboot. It is unclear why the streaming giant abandoned the project.
«I'm very sad to report this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me. Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with 'Buffy: New Sunnydale,'» the actress said. «I want to thank Chloe Zhao because I never thought I would find myself back in stylish yet accessible Buffy boots. And thanks to Chloe, I remembered how much I love her and how much she means not only to me but to all of you… This changes nothing, and I promise, if the apocalypse really does come, you can still call me»
