Vice President Kamala Harris made her first public appearance after President Joe Biden announced that he would not seek re-election at the White House on Monday, July 22. Harris began her speech by expressing support for Biden and praising his achievements during his four years as president. She mainly focused on celebrating student athletes, as the event was dedicated to them.

Considering that this was her first event after Biden’s announcement, Harris started by saying that he is feeling «much better» after testing positive for COVID. She said that he wanted to be at the event, but is still recovering. She then moved on to talk about his accomplishments. «I would like to say a few words about our president. Joe Biden’s legacy over the past three years is unparalleled in modern history», - she said. «In one term, he has already surpassed the legacy of most presidents who served two terms in office».

Harris then talked about how she met the president while working with his late son Beau. «The qualities that Beau revered in his father, the same qualities that I see every day in our president, his honesty, his integrity, his dedication to his faith and family, his big heart and his love, deep love for our country. And I am a first-hand witness to the fact that every day our president, Joe Biden, fights for the American people, and we are deeply, deeply grateful for his service to our nation», - she said, citing The Guardian.

After talking about the president, Harris addressed the NCAA student athletes present at the event, honoring them. With six participants heading to the Olympics, Harris expressed her support for them before the games in Paris. «As members of Team USA, you are ambassadors of our nation, and we will proudly cheer you on, and look forward to congratulating you when you bring home the gold», - she said.

The speech took place the day after Biden announced that he would not be running for re-election, and he endorsed his vice president. «It is an honor to have the president’s support, and my intention is to earn and win this nomination», - Harris said in her remarks
