The first autopsies of the deceased on the luxurious yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily have been conducted.

Seven people died when the superyacht Bayesian, carrying 22 people including 12 passengers and 10 crew members, sank during a sudden strong storm on August 19.

The deceased have been identified as British technology entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch; Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda; Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Blumer and his wife Judy; and yacht chef Recaldo Thomas.

Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, survived along with 14 others.

On Monday, September 2, the Italian news agency ANSA announced that autopsies on Christopher and Neda Morvillo confirmed drowning as the cause of death. The autopsies were conducted by forensic experts appointed by prosecutors in Palermo.

Preliminary results of the investigations conducted by Professor Antonella Argo from the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Palermo showed no signs of trauma.

Autopsies on Jonathan and Judy Blumer are scheduled for Wednesday, while autopsies on the remaining three victims — Mike, his daughter Hannah, and chef Thomas — are still pending. Lynch organized the yacht trip to celebrate a recent legal victory.

Morvillo was one of Lynch’s lawyers in the US in a fraud case related to the sale of the British search engine Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in a deal worth $ 11 billion in 2011, which quickly turned into a scandal due to allegations of falsifying the company’s financial reports to inflate its value. Lynch was acquitted of the charges in June. Morvillo had previously worked as a federal prosecutor investigating the September 11 attacks, according to the New York Post.

Chief Prosecutor Ambrogio Cartozio confirmed on Saturday, August 24, that an investigation had been launched to determine every possible element of responsibility, including the captain, crew, supervisory personnel, and yacht manufacturer.

James Catfield, a 51-year-old citizen of New Zealand, was the head of the crew on the 184-foot superyacht when it capsized after being caught in a tornado-like whirlpool during the storm.

Catfield is currently under investigation on charges of «reckless shipwreck and multiple counts of negligent homicide», - according to the Italian news agency ANSA
