Pit Birn, the surviving member of the English duo Naked Eyes, passed away on September 14 at the age of 74 after a brief illness, reports Ultimate Classic Rock.
Naked Eyes, which included Birn and Rob Fisher, achieved success in the 1980s, reaching the Top 40 in the U.S. four times, although they did not have similar achievements in their home country. Their first hit, a cover of Burt Bacharach’s standard «Always Something There to Remind Me», - was released in 1983 and reached number 8 on the charts. Following that was the original song «Promises, Promises», - which peaked at number 11. The debut album also featured the song «When the Lights Go Out», - and in 1984, the band returned to the charts with the hit «(What) In the Name of Love», - the music video for which featuring Lisa Vanderpump became popular.
After the band was unable to replicate their synthesizer sound on tour, they disbanded following the release of their second album. In 1985, Birn recorded backing vocals for Stevie Wonder’s hit «Part-Time Lover». After Fisher’s death in 1999, Birn continued to tour and release albums under the Naked Eyes name, as well as releasing a solo album titled «The Real Illusion» in 2001. In 2002, a previously unreleased version of «Promises, Promises» featuring Madonna’s vocals, recorded as a favor for her then-boyfriend Jellybean Benitez, was included in the compilation «Everything and More».
Birn is survived by his ex-wife and three children.
