Pete Hegseth, former Fox News host, was nominated by Donald Trump for the position of the next Secretary of Defense of the United States after Senate approval. After several Democrats — and a few Republicans — expressed opposition to his appointment, Americans wondered if Hegseth would have enough votes for confirmation.
Hegseth left Fox News in November 2024, shortly after Trump’s victory in the elections and his appointment to lead the Pentagon.
No, Hegseth has not been confirmed yet. However, as reported by the Associated Press, the Senate advanced his nomination on January 23, 2025. The final vote is expected on January 24, 2025.
For Hegseth to be confirmed, he needs the consent and approval of the Senate. During his confirmation hearing in the Senate in January 2025, Hegseth faced questions from several Democrats and Republicans regarding his past controversies and scandals. Two Republicans voted «against» on the procedural vote of Hegseth’s nomination: Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski.
In a statement, Murkowski explained why she rejected Hegseth’s appointment. «The Secretary of Defense must demonstrate and model the standards of behavior and character that we expect from all military personnel, and Mr. Hegseth’s appointment to this role raises significant concerns that I cannot ignore», - the statement read, according to CBS News. «Given the global security situation, it is critically important that we confirm a Secretary of Defense, however, I regret that I cannot support Mr. Hegseth».
«After careful consideration, I am forced to conclude that I cannot in good conscience support his appointment as Secretary of Defense», - Murkowski concluded, while her colleague Collins noted in her corresponding statement: «I have decided to vote against the appointment of Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense. While I appreciate his brave military service and his ongoing commitment to our service members and their families, I am concerned that he lacks the experience and perspective necessary for successful work».
In the procedural vote held on January 23, 2025, Hegseth’s nomination advanced with a vote of 51−49. He has the votes to become the next Secretary of Defense
