The TV show 9−1-1, which follows the lives of the first responders in Los Angeles — including police officers, paramedics, firefighters, and dispatchers — aired its eighth season. The eighth season premiered on September 26, 2024, and consisted of 18 episodes.

Created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear, the show has been officially renewed for a ninth season, expected to air in the fall of 2025.

At the heart of the twist, Captain Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) died in the 15th episode of the eighth season titled «Lab Rats».

Responding to an explosion in the lab that exposed the 118 team to a deadly virus, Bobby discovered that his breathing apparatus had been compromised. Deciding to save his team, he administered the only available antidote, Chimney (Kenneth Choi), sacrificing himself in the process.

Krause addressed the death of his character on screen in a statement received by Variety, explaining that Bobby’s departure was meant to reflect the heroism of the responders.

«I've heard that many fans are upset by this loss, and they have every right to be. It’s a loss», - Krause said after the episode. «However, it was a bold creative decision in a bold show. Bobby Nash was written as a sacrifice, and he was created for that. First responders risk their lives at work so others can see another day. His story honors them».

Krause also acknowledged the dedication behind the scenes, adding: «We at 9−1-1 pay tribute to all the incredible men and women who perform these dangerous jobs and strive to ensure our safety. Our show is sometimes very difficult to make with long hours, complex stunts, and complicated disasters. We couldn’t do it without each other».

Yes, Krause left 9−1-1 after his character’s on-screen death in the eighth season. However, Minear confirmed that Krause did not ask to leave the show. In an interview with TV Line, Minear explained that it was «a creative decision on my part».

«I've been thinking about it for a while», - he shared. «I hinted at it in the episode Hot Shots when Brad Torrance says that [his character] won’t wake up from a coma, and he had a fan that said, 'You can’t kill him! He’s what holds [the firehouse] together!' I was seriously thinking about it when we wrote that scene».

Minear added: «Look, am I walking a thin line? Maybe. On the other hand, if the stakes are never real, if there’s really no chance that any of these dangers these characters face will lead to something, I think the show can die»
