Now that Donald Trump is president again, Republicans intend to make changes to the federal workforce, including the US Department of Education. After winning the 2024 election, 78-year-old Trump promised to «return education to the states» and stated that he wants to «drain the swamp of government education». According to new information, Trump plans to significantly reduce the staff at the department, but does this mean complete elimination?
Find out what Trump said about his plans for the Department of Education and whether the liquidation of the department is possible.

The US Department of Education is focused on promoting «student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness, fostering educational excellence, and ensuring equal access for students of all ages», - according to its official website.
According to several sources, there are about 4,400 employees working in the Department of Education. It is unclear how this number may change under Trump’s leadership in light of the proposed changes to the staff. Earlier this year, the White House announced changes to the federal workforce regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
Technically, the president cannot completely eliminate the Department of Education, as it was established by an act of Congress. Therefore, Congress would have to advance this process.
As mentioned earlier, the president cannot simply abolish the Department of Education; Congress would have to intervene to advance this. According to U.S. News, experts claim that the liquidation of the department would not affect specific programs or funding, such as Pell grants and federal student loans.
Although Trump previously stated his intention to transfer responsibility for education to the states, the Department of Education’s website states that education is actually the responsibility of states and local authorities across the country. The department also claims that 92 percent of funding for elementary and secondary education comes from states, while only 8 percent comes from the federal level
