Americans live with questionable air quality longer than they know. However, recent fires in New Jersey have affected the air quality index in the state and in areas throughout the New York metropolitan area, including Long Island. A new report from the American Lung Association sounds the alarm, and below we break down everything we know about how air quality affects virtually everyone in the United States.

According to the «State of the Air» report from the American Lung Association from April 2025, lower air quality in America can be explained by various reasons.

«Years of successful emissions cleaning from transportation, energy production, and industrial processes have contributed to reducing ozone levels across the country», - the report says. «Unfortunately, as shown in 2023, one bad fire season has the potential to neutralize this progress, at least temporarily, creating new challenges for air pollution control efforts and increasing health risks for affected communities».

The note about the «bad fire» from the 2023 report referred to forest fires in Canada that created a smoke blanket over the Northeast and Midwest in mid-2023.

«This year’s report shows the dramatic impact of air pollution on an increasing number of people», - said ALA President and CEO Harold Wimmer, according to USA Today. «Families across the U.S. face the consequences of air pollution every day, and extreme heat and forest fires make it even worse. Air pollution triggers asthma attacks in children, makes outdoor workers sick, and leads to low birth weight in infants».

In April 2025, residents of New York and Long Island reported lower air quality due to fires in New Jersey.

According to the 2025 Lung Association report, the top 10 metro areas across the U.S. with the worst «daily particle pollution» this year include the following: Bakersfield, California, Fairbanks, Alaska, Eugene-Springfield, Oregon, Visalia, California, Fresno-Madera-Hanford, California, Reno-Carson City-Gardnerville-Ranchos, Nevada-California, Los Angeles-Long Beach, California, Yakima, Washington, Seattle-Tacoma, Washington, and Sacramento-Roseville, California.

As for the most polluted metro areas in terms of «short-term particles», - these are the following areas: Eugene-Springfield, Oregon, Los Angeles-Long Beach, Sacramento-Roseville, Seattle-Tacoma, Washington, Reno-Carson City, Nevada, and Fairbanks, Alaska
