Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal and metabolic disorder that affects millions of women worldwide. This condition can impact ovulation, fertility, menstrual cycles, weight, skin condition, and insulin levels.

Despite its name, not everyone diagnosed with PCOS develops ovarian cysts.

Medical experts have officially renamed PCOS to POSM (Polycystic Ovary Metabolic Syndrome) following an international consensus involving thousands of healthcare professionals and patients. This change was adopted because specialists believed that the old name did not reflect the broader metabolic and endocrine effects of the condition.

POSM stands for Polycystic Ovary Metabolic Syndrome. According to the Endocrine Society, the updated name is intended to better reflect the hormonal, reproductive, and metabolic characteristics of the disorder.

Symptoms of POSM can vary among individuals but often include irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, acne, weight gain, excessive hair growth on the face or body, thinning hair on the scalp, and insulin resistance. Some individuals may also experience anxiety, depression, or an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes and other metabolic diseases
