On Friday, May 16, the New Orleans police announced that several prisoners had escaped from the Orleans Parish Justice Center with «internal» help. Officials warned the public that the unidentified prisoners should be considered armed and dangerous.
Below you will find updates on the developing situation and learn how the prisoners escaped from police custody.
During a press conference on May 16, Sheriff Susan Hutson informed the public how the prisoners were able to leave the Orleans Parish Justice Center.
«They were able to break the door», - Hutson explained. «They were still able to leave the prison around 1:01 am after breaking through the wall behind a toilet in the prison».
During their escape, the unnamed prisoners pulled the cell to break it around 12:30 am local time on May 16. Surveillance footage showed the prisoners leaving through the door on the dock. A photo from the apparent escape showed a large hole cut behind the toilet with the words «We are innocent» and «Too easy LoL» above it, according to NBC News.
Initially, it was reported that 11 prisoners had escaped, but Hutson clarified that one person did not escape and never attempted to flee. Police also noted that the prisoners were able to escape with help from «inside our department».
Police did not disclose the identities of all the escaped prisoners, but one of them, 20-year-old Kendall Miles, was apprehended by police in the French Quarter of New Orleans. The State Police wrote on Twitter: «NOLA Troopers discovered escaped Kendall Miles in the French Quarter this morning. After a brief chase, he was apprehended on Royal Street. Officers continue to work with partners to locate the remaining escapees and ensure public safety».
Prison records confirm that several escaped prisoners were charged with murder or attempted murder. The others were charged with aggravated assault with a firearm, armed robbery with a firearm, battery, and other crimes, according to NBC News.
At the time of publication, police had only detained one of the 10 escaped prisoners. The other nine are still at large
