Fans of the Yellowstone series assumed that season 5B would be difficult to watch. After rumors of behind-the-scenes drama surfaced in 2023, viewers learned that the star of the show, Kevin Costner, had left the show. But what was the reason for his departure? In the first episode of season 5 part 2, John Dutton was found dead from a gunshot. However, the camera did not show Kevin’s face, and several sources reported that it was a stand-in for Kevin. Therefore, Kevin was not on set to film that scene.
During an appearance on CBS Mornings in June 2024, Kevin explained that he had scheduling conflicts between Yellowstone and Horizon: An American Saga.
«Yellowstone was my top priority. But at a certain point, when you make commitments, you just have to live with them», - he explained. «I wanted to work more than once a year, and it was important for me to find a place for Yellowstone and Horizon, but people couldn’t make the deadlines. They were busy; they had a lot going on».
Nevertheless, Kevin insisted that he would be open to returning to Yellowstone if «the story goes in the right direction».
Kevin opened up about his departure from Yellowstone to PEOPLE in June 2024. Noting that he «liked the people on the show» and «that it was about something», - Kevin pointed out that «scripts weren’t coming» for over a year.
«When Taylor [Sheridan] first offered me this, it was one season and [like] a long movie, which speaks my language … but ultimately, I think what happened is the studio didn’t want that», - Kevin explained. «And because he’s such a prolific writer, he said, 'I can do this. I can create a series that continues.'»
Reflecting on his widely discussed departure from the series, Kevin recalled the rumors that were circulating about him.
«I read all the stories. I was disappointed that no one from their side … ever defended what I actually did for them», - he said, addressing the Yellowstone crew. «There came a moment when I thought, 'When is someone going to say something about what I did, as opposed to what I didn’t do?'»
It is unclear whether there will be a 6th season of Yellowstone. Hope for an additional season was in 2023, but Paramount did not approve the idea
