But one of the beloved actors left the show by the end of the first season: Jon Hamm, who played Monty Miller. So, why was his character killed off?

Monty’s death was not shown on screen, but producers confirmed that the character died in a hospital room from a heart attack. He had suffered from multiple heart attacks until the end of his life.
Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton) learned in the finale of the first season that Monty would die. Therefore, Monty offered Tommy to take on the role of president of M-Tex and to be the executor of his will alongside Monty’s wife, Cami (Demi Moore).
Although the actor is a favorite of television and movie viewers, the death of his character Monty was inevitable in Landman. During an interview with TV Insider in January 2025, co-creator Christian Wallace said they had been hinting at Monty’s decline throughout the first season.
«Yes, you sprinkle those little breadcrumbs throughout the season», - explained Christian. «There's Monty checking his pulse on his watch or his wife Cami telling him he can’t have coffee anymore, and just little things that were sprinkled throughout the time to let you know that something is happening, so when it finally happens, it’s not quite so sudden».
Christian added: «But you also don’t want to be too heavy-handed and telegraph it to the audience. So it’s just a matter of trying to find that balance of letting people know there’s a problem without making it the only thing they can think about».
The second season of Landman premieres on November 16, 2025 on Paramount+. All new episodes will be released weekly until the finale in January 2026.
At the moment, Landman has not been renewed for a third season, but the actors are hopeful for the possibility. In an exclusive interview in November 2025 with Hollywood Life, actor Mark Collie hinted that there are «more stories that need to be told».
