Fans of the show 9−1-1, spoilers ahead if you haven’t watched the latest episode of the eighth season yet. The show just lost one of its main characters, and fans are grieving over this loss. Several weeks ago, social media users posted speculations about photos from the set that resembled a funeral scene, and viewers expressed their anger and sadness over the death of Peter Krause’s character, Captain Robert Nash, known as Bobby. So one question still lingers in the air for everyone who watched the last episode: why did 9−1-1 kill Bobby?

Below, Hollywood Life breaks down everything we know about Bobby’s final moments and why Peter left the show.

In addition to Peter, the main cast of 9−1-1 includes Angela Bassett as Athena Grant-Nash, Oliver Stark as Buck, Aisha Hinds as Hen, Kenneth Choi as Chimney, Rockmond Dunbar as Michael, Connie Britton as Abby, Jennifer Love Hewitt as Maddie, Ryan Guzman as Eddie, and Corinne Massiah as May.

In the final moments of the April 2025 episode of the eighth season, Bobby discovers a hole in his breathing apparatus through which a virus enters his mask and infects him. He isolates himself from the rest of the 118 team and initially doesn’t tell anyone about the hole because Chimney would never take the antidote.

Bobby and Athena’s final moments are poignant. Saying goodbye to his love, Bobby tearfully apologizes and says, «I didn’t want to leave like this. I didn’t choose to leave. I chose to save my team because it was right. It was never because I wanted to leave. I don’t want to leave. If I could choose, I would stay with you. Always… Los Angeles was supposed to be my redemption, not my home. And then you said yes to dinner, and I started living again. I love you, baby».

Peter released a statement about his character’s death on screen in a statement received by Variety. He said that Bobby’s death was because his «story honors» real first responders.

«I've heard that many fans are upset about this loss, and they have every right to be. It’s a loss», - Peter said after the episode aired. «However, it wasn’t just a bold creative choice in a bold show. Bobby Nash was written as a sacrifice, and he was created for that. First responders risk their lives at work so others can see another day. His story honors them».

Peter did not explain why he left 9−1-1. But a few weeks before the April 2025 episode of the eighth season, photos appeared on social media that seemed to depict a character’s funeral scene.

9−1-1 showrunner Tim Minear emphasized that Peter did not ask to leave the show. Instead, Bobby’s death was «entirely a creative decision on my part, really», - Tim told TV Line in an interview published on April 17, 2025.

«I've been thinking about it for a while», - Tim said, referring to Bobby’s final moments on the show. «I hinted at it in the 'Hot Shots' episode when Brad Torrance says that [his character] won’t wake up from the coma, and he says that [the character] holds [the fire department] together! I seriously thought about it when writing that scene».

Tim also noted that if «the stakes are never real» in the series, then «there's really no chance that any of the dangers these characters face will lead to anything». He even added, «I think the show could die», - without including the realistic risks that first responders take
